Bruce Tarter:  The American Lab

Bruce tarter gave an excellent talk and provided captivating insights into episodes in the Lab's history, from its founding in 1952 to the time it was transferred to private status.

Greg Gleeson:  Alameda Co. Underwater Search and Recovery

 

Greg, a member of the county's all-volunteer underwater search unit since 1998, spoke of many challenging call-outs including some well known recoveries!

He also spoke of the rigorous training and certification requirements his unit must follow.

Kurt McAninch:  Air Traffic Control

 

Kurt gave a fascinating and highly entertaining look inside the world of Air Traffic Control.   He shared many operational aspects that we seldom realize, as passangers. Kurt also shared many stories of his experiences as a controller​.

Kyle Samperton:  Another view on the extinction of the dinosaur

 

Kyle gave a very detailed yet engaging explanation of the use of nuclear forensics to assess the size of specific volcanic debris fields and their correlation to episodes of dinosaur extinction.   His talk included photographs of fieldwork with his team and the terrains they studied.

Nikola Dudukovic:  3-D Printing and Additive Manufacturing at LLNL

 

Nikola presented a very in-depth description of the intricacies associated with 3-D printing, including the properties of resulting materials.

Throughout, he pointed to the Lab's leading research work in these areas.

Ann Reichert:  Travels in the 'Five-Stans'

 

Ann gave us a captivating portrayal of her travels through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan- with interesting insights into the cultures, the history, and the people.  She also shared some of those funny and not so-funny incidents that occurred along the way.

Staci described a research project at the Lab aimed at developing methods to rapidly diagnose Anthrax infection to efficiently restore contaminated areas and facilities. .

Jhi-Young Joo - Modernizing the Grid

Jhi-Young introduced the Lab's Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience Program and laid out overall challenges of the modern grid operation and research done at LLNL to improve conditions in the future.
